Tutorial #2 - Learning the Workspace

Change the layout of the application to fit your needs.

Photoshop default layout

Step 1

When opening your project, you might see all these windows hovering on the side of your canvas. Don't stress out! The most important window to remember is the toolbar on the left, which has most of the tools you will need including the text, move, selection, and brush tools. It is always good to have the Layers and Navigator windows open to help you zoom in and around all the different parts of your image.

Step 2

1. The windows in Photoshop are very easy to move around. Similar to other applications, you can drag them around using the bar on top of each window.

2. You can also attach different windows together by dragging them into one another like shown above. Having a collection of windows that you know you will be using often will make organizing and finding everything you need much easier.

Step 3

1. If you can't find the window that you are looking for, you can always select "Window" on the top of Photoshop and select whichever window you need.

2. There are also preset and customizable workspaces that you can work off of in Photoshop. Having a Workspace that fits your design needs can make the entire process much more efficient. Read about the different types of preset workspaces available in Photoshop below.


DIFFERENT TYPES OF WORKSPACES

Essentials workspace Photoshop

Essentials

The Essentials workspace will provide you with the most commonly used windows, including layers, swatches, and more.

3D workspace Photoshop

3D

Working with 3D tools in Photoshop can be incredibly useful, especially for text and modeling for animations. You will be able to play with complex lighting and 3D models.

Graphic and Web workspace Photoshop

Graphic and Web

If you are interested in user interface design, this workspace may be a perfect fit for you. You will be equipped with text windows, image properties, as well as rulers & grids.

Motion workspace Photoshop

Motion

Although it's not the most popular workspace, the Motion workspace allows you to work with video and audio files, as well as enabling you with all the tools you might need for some basic 2D animation.

Painting workspace Photoshop

Painting

If you are interested in digital painting, the Painting workspace is what you will want be working with. This workspace will give you easy access to swatches for selecting colors and brush presets for creating lines or texture.

Photography workspace Photoshop

Photography

Photo-editing is one of the most popular uses of Photoshop. This workspace will allow you to easily make a variety of different adjustments to your images, including brightness, hue/saturation, exposure, levels, and much more.
